The Vietnamese government is implementing policies to support the coal industry and traditional industries in transitioning to more environmentally friendly and sustainable production models.
Faced with the growing challenges of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and protecting the environment, traditional industries such as coal mining, steel production and chemicals are benefiting from comprehensive government support policies. These supports not only facilitate the transition to a more sustainable production model but also help maintain competitiveness in the context of increasingly stringent global environmental standards.
In terms of finance, the Government has implemented tax incentives such as tax exemptions for businesses that invest in green technology, use renewable energy or apply low-emission production processes. Financial support funds and preferential loans have also been established to encourage businesses to upgrade infrastructure and replace old energy-consuming equipment with more modern, efficient systems. For example, in the steel industry, the application of electric arc furnaces (EAFs) to replace traditional blast furnaces has significantly reduced CO2 emissions, and businesses investing in this technology often receive financial support from Government programs.
On the technical side, the Government is promoting green technology research and development (R&D) programs , collaborating with research institutes and businesses to develop solutions such as carbon capture and storage (CCS), recycling industrial waste, or using environmentally friendly alternative materials. In the chemical industry, research projects on the production of bio-based chemicals are being prioritized, helping to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and limit emissions.
In addition, workforce training programs play a key role in equipping the workforce with the knowledge and skills needed to operate new technologies. Training courses on using automation systems, analyzing data from the IoT, or managing green manufacturing processes are being widely deployed. This not only improves professional capacity but also helps workers adapt to changes in the industry, thereby ensuring sustainable employment in the context of transformation.
These support policies not only help traditional industries reduce their environmental impact but also open up opportunities for innovation and development in a more sustainable direction. However, to make the most of these opportunities, businesses need to proactively develop long-term strategies, combined with government support, to achieve a balance between economic benefits and environmental responsibility. Going forward, continuing to expand support policies, especially in the areas of advanced technology and international cooperation, will be key for heavy industries to maintain their important role in the global economy.
